about

Vinyl available on boomkat, bleep, etc.

Trembling Air is the duo’s second release for Nicolas Jaar's Other People serial label, following last year’s The Free Fall Inspirations. The title of the duo's first vinyl release 'Trembling Air' is a metaphoric and literal equivalent of music, an experiment to understand the origin of music and its basic primordial role when there weren't any particular word for it, only the ritual act of practicing it as part of everyday life. 'Trembling Air' is an attempt to overcome classical world music aesthetics: the totally meaningless juxtaposition of different cultural traditions and the devastating driving force of commercialism. There is a vast and inexhaustible musical tradition of tribes and ethnic groups around the world that are still quite unknown to wider public, and 'Trembling Air' aims to be a good example that this tradition can be an important inspiration for today's musicians. The whole material is basically based on improvisation and contains a lot of randomness, which is an important peculiarity to keep in mind while listening to the album. The titles of the tracks are coming from a poem written by the group, poetically revealing the concept behind the album.

After the heart-smothering vocal intro of an imaginary funeral we are taking off to trembling air with simple gamelan sounds backed by fluid melodious synth chords in Seeing From Above. Thousands Below is a dronish-drunken moonwalk of Japanese heavenly court music processed into unusual sliding piano chords. Like Endless Patterns is a funny playful reinterpretation of dance-floor music. Making Their Endless Practices is a noise-heavy buddhist drone and exorcism of Vietnam warlike nightmarish flashbacks. Of Roots Hardly Known is a completely off-the-album track giving the listener a short relaxing break. With No Directions is a rolling river of lullabies sung by mothers of unknown origins. Names or Labels is one of the highest peaks of the album, a symphony-like wandering around a monumental pyramid of sounds in the middle of a visionary jungle of collective unconscious. Thus They Celebrate is a light and playful ceremony of girls' initiation. Speechless Yet Echoing is a totally decomposed zen buddhist lecture on sound and noise. The Ancient And Continuous is a kind of meditation by the seashore about the origins of music. Trembling Of The Air is the essence of the album, a feather-light inspiration and the culmination of the quest for building the monument of music.
